Programme Overview

Description

Your Family or Mine is a sitcom that takes place entirely over Friday and Saturday night dinners with the extended family.

Shani and Shai, married with children, attend family dinners every weekend at their respective parents’ homes: Friday with her parents and Saturday with his. Every episode begins in the family car, on the ride over to Shani’s folks’ place, and ends with the drive back home from Shai’s the following day. In between they’re immersed in their extended families and are obliged to deal with all their various quirks. The show’s all about how ritual family dinners operate on “autopilot”– you attend them whether you want to or not, you meet the same people, eat the same food, and mostly just try to survive the familial minefield.

The show also shines a light on a melting pot of cultures - Shani’s parents are Sephardic (Middle Eastern) Jews, Shai’s parents are European Ashkenazis - emphasizing the different mentalities of the two households and the ways in which Shai and Shani are forced to navigate not only their in-laws, but their cultural nuances as well.

Currently in its 8th season in Israel, the US adaptation of Your Family or Mine was the third most popular series on TBS during its run behind The Big Bang Theory and Family Guy. Its finale delivered a season high for the channel among men 18–34 years.

With five seasons produced in Greece, Your Family or Mine attained an average series share approximately 34% higher than the channel average, with a 58% higher rating. The show was repeatedly the slot leader among all individuals and in its target group of 14-55-year-olds.
