The reality of global conflict today is unlike the past. Global superpowers and multilateral defense alliances have made direct warfare too potentially catastrophic.
Conflict explores the possibility of a proxy war – when an enemy attacks a neutral territory intending to provoke a wider conflict - and the human drama of those forced into combat. With an unknown aggressor come many questions. Who is the enemy? Who are your allies? What is at stake? What is the price of freedom? And of peace?
As a military unit completes its training exercises and a nation prepares to celebrate Midsummer’s Eve, an unidentified enemy invades a picturesque Finnish peninsula by stealth.
Separated from their fellow conscripts, squad leader Annika and her motley team of recruits escape into what is now the occupied area, while Unit Commander Captain Rami goes rogue in search of his wife and daughter. With all communications to the mainland disabled, they are on their own.
Despite clear warnings that any resistance will be met with violence, the US President and other allies urge Finland’s newly elected Madam President to take decisive action fast - there are Americans and other nationals are among the 10,000 people, now hostages, including members of the President’s own family.
When a video of captured soldiers begging the Finnish government to accept the enemy's demands to give up the peninsula without a fight is posted online, the President is double-crossed by the country’s old guard Prime Minister, who publicly announces that Finland will seek a diplomatic solution with the occupier.
Tensions mount as the President’s military countermeasures lead to counter-threats from the still unidentified enemy. In the occupied area, Annika and her team are now operating as a stealth guerilla squad, while veteran Captain Rami has teamed up with a local resistance group. Elsewhere, special forces discover that the enemy is using local civilians as human shields and that they now have access to long-range missiles.
With the very real risk of this invasion escalating into an all-out war, President Saaristo must follow her instincts and moral compass to not only secure the safety of her own country but also the rest of Europe.
